Solar in Dartmoor — Local Guide ## Solar panels on Dartmoor: rural energy independence done right Dartmoor National Park's 368 square miles cover everything from exposed moorland farms to wooded valley villages. Energy bills here tend to be higher than the national average — many properties are off the gas network and rely on oil, LPG or electric heating — which makes solar PV, battery storage and heat pumps an exceptionally strong combination. ### Why solar makes sense across Dartmoor Despite the moor's reputation for mist and weather, Dartmoor's eastern edge and the southern foothills get a similar number of annual sunshine hours to the rest of Devon — well over 1,500 hours per year. The cooler ambient temperatures at altitude actually improve photovoltaic panel efficiency, since panel output drops slightly in very hot weather. A well-positioned Dartmoor system frequently outperforms an equivalent installation closer to sea level. Many Dartmoor homes have generous roof areas, large outbuildings and southerly aspects across open ground. That gives our designers flexibility to specify either rooftop arrays, ground mounts hidden behind hedge banks, or a combination of both. Properties already running off oil or LPG see particularly large savings when solar is paired with a battery and an air source heat pump or hot water diverter. ### Planning solar in the National Park Dartmoor National Park Authority is the planning authority for the moor, and they take a careful but sensible approach to renewables. The Authority's policies actively support small-scale renewable energy where it does not harm the special qualities of the landscape. In practice, that means roof-mounted domestic solar is usually approved, particularly on outbuildings, modern barns or roof slopes that are not visible from public viewpoints. For listed buildings, properties within designated settlements like Moretonhampstead, Chagford, Lustleigh or Princetown, or where panels would be highly visible from open moor, applications need to be designed sensitively. We use all-black in-roof or low-profile panels, plan layouts that respect rooflines and produce supporting visualisations and design statements as part of the application. We've successfully secured consent on dozens of moorland properties — including listed and traditional Devon longhouses. #### Ground-mounted solar on Dartmoor land Where roof options are limited — for example on thatched, slate-clad or heavily shaded properties — a small ground array can be the perfect alternative. We use steel screw-pile foundations that don't require concrete, leave no permanent scar on the land, and can be fully removed at end of life. Carefully sited behind banks, walls or hedges, ground arrays can deliver 100% of a typical household's annual electricity consumption. For working farms and estates, larger 30kWp–250kWp arrays often suit the energy profile of barns, dairies and grain stores. We handle the planning process, DNO connection (G99) and full structural and ecological surveys. ### Battery storage and grid resilience Dartmoor's distribution grid is robust but exposed. Storm damage, fallen trees and lightning strikes can occasionally cause outages lasting several hours. A solar system paired with a hybrid inverter and battery storage can keep critical circuits — fridges, freezers, lighting, broadband and water pumps — running through these outages, restoring grid-quality power within seconds of a fault. We typically specify Tesla Powerwall 3, Sunsynk and GivEnergy systems for Dartmoor projects, sized for the property's actual usage rather than upsold.
